The NFL is still less than a couple months before we have preseason games. As we all know, the NFL schedule dropped last month, and we have a lot to be excited about starting Week 1. With the NFL Draft and free agency, there was a lot of movements and teams are moving towards getting better. My top 5 AFC teams have been identified and now we turn our attention to the NFC. The San Francisco 49ers were the best team in the NFC, and they made a run to the Super Bowl. They fell to the Chiefs in an instant classic and now they’re looking to get back. Detroit, Philadelphia, Green Bay, Atlanta, Chicago, and a few others have made strides to get better. Who are the top 5 NFC teams heading into the 2024 season? Below are my top 5 NFC teams heading into the 2024 season.
Detroit Lions
The Detroit Lions fell a game short of making their first Super Bowl appearance. The Lions had the Niners beat but lost in the end at the NFC Championship Game. The first big move this offseason was keeping offensive coordinator Ben Johnson. Johnson was the most sought after candidate to become a head coach this offseason. On offense, they gave Amon-Ra St. Brown a nice extension. They also signed Jared Goff for the foreseeable future by giving him a huge contract. The offensive line is already elite, and you add Jahmyr Gibbs, David Montgomery, Sam LaPorta and Jameson Williams. The offense will be one of the best in the league once again. The defense is lead by Aidan Hutchinson and a rising star in Brian Branch. They traded for Carlton Davis while drafting Terrion Arnold and Ennis Rakestraw Jr. Detroit is solid and ready to make their first ever Super Bowl appearance.
San Francisco 49ers
The Niners represented the NFC in the Super Bowl last season. They were arguably the best team in the league last season when healthy. San Francisco is still an elite team seeing they still have Brock Purdy on his rookie deal. Brandon Aiyuk is still the big question while he’s waiting on a new contract. Will he finally report and play on the final year of his deal? Christian McCaffrey signed a new 2-year extension keeping him in the Bay Area until 2028. The defense will still be an elite group that’s led by Fred Warner and Nick Bosa. They lost a couple of keys pieces on that side of the ball, but they’ll get back Talanoa Hufanga. This will be the year for the Niners before they sign Purdy to a huge extension. The Niners could be the best team and have homefield advantage in the playoffs again.
Philadelphia Eagles
The Philadelphia Eagles were the best team in the league for the first three months. They were 10-1 but finished the season losing 6 of their last 7 games. Philadelphia and Howie Roseman turned that into one of the greatest off seasons. On offense, Jalen Hurts is looking to return to MVP form behind one of the best offensive lines in the league. Unfortunately, they lost their heart and soul in Jason Kelce after he retired. The Eagles signed Saquon Barkley in free agency, and he will have a huge impact. They also locked up DeVonta Smith and A.J. Brown for the foreseeable future. Fletcher Cox retired on defense, but the Eagles have a great defensive line led by Jalen Carter and Milton Williams. The secondary will be much better after drafting the two top corners and bringing back C.J. Gardner-Johnson.
Green Bay Packers
Green Bay showed what they could do when they manhandled the Cowboys in the playoffs on the road. Jordan Love carved up the defense and he should be one of the better signal callers in the league. They lost Aaron Jones, but he was replaced by Josh Jacobs in free agency. The receiving core is great with Christian Watson, Jayden Reed, Romeo Doubs, and Dontayvion Wicks. The offensive line has been up and down at times, so this is something to look out for this season. The defense is a good one, but they allowed their fair share of big passing plays last year. They brought in Xavier McKinney to go along with an impressive secondary. The evolution of Jordan Love will determine how great this team can be this season. Can the Pack compete with the Lions in the NFC North this year?
Dallas Cowboys
This was a toss-up between the Cowboys, Falcons, Rams, and Bears for the final spot. Dallas got the final spot and it’s all due to how well Dak Prescott played last season. Prescott had an MVP-like season and he’ll be playing for a new contract this season. Dallas does have uncertainty at the running back position after bringing back Ezekiel Elliott. CeeDee Lamb has been a holdout, and he wants a new contract. Lamb could be looking at getting the kind of money Justin Jefferson got from the Vikings. The defense will still be a strong point from the Cowboys, but they were exposed some last season. Dallas didn’t make any major moves in free agency and that could hurt them in the long run. Will the loss of Dan Quinn affect the defense that much?
