We have the AFC East predictions out of the way so let’s go to arguably the toughest division in football. The AFC North will be a dog fight between all four teams this season. The Baltimore Ravens are hoping to get to the next level this season. Baltimore made it to the AFC Championship game but fell to the eventual champion Kansas City Chiefs. The Bengals had their promising season derailed when Joe Burrow was lost for the season. Cleveland also lost their signal caller for the season when Deshaun Watson went down with a shoulder injury. Pittsburgh upgraded their quarterback position by trading for Justin Fields and acquiring Russell Wilson. All four of these teams should be good this season. Will Baltimore or Cincinnati capture the AFC North crown? Or will Cleveland or Pittsburgh make a run and win the AFC North? Check out Trav’s 2024 AFC North predictions.
Lamar Jackson won his second MVP award, and they were the top seed in the AFC. Unfortunately, they fell to the Chiefs in the AFC Championship game. Baltimore had one of the best running games in the league but went away from it in the playoffs. They signed Derrick Henry and if he’s the same aggressive runner he always been this is huge for the offense. Having Derrick Henry and Lamar Jackson in the backfield together will be scary for defenses. The defense is their identity and last year they had one of the best in the league. They rewarded Justin Madubuike to a huge extension after having a career season. Unfortunately, they lost one of their captains on defense in Patrick Queen. Queen went on and signed with the rival Pittsburgh Steelers and this could affect the defense. The Ravens will still compete for the AFC North crown.
The Cincinnati Bengals had dreams of making their second Super Bowl appearance in three years. Joe Burrow went down with a wrist injury, missed the rest of the season and their dreams were shattered. They did lose one of their key components on offense in Joe Mixon this offseason. Zack Moss from the Indianapolis Colts came over and he’ll team with Chase Brown in the backfield. Moss did an amazing job when Jonathan Taylor was on the sidelines. They kept Tee Higgins as he’s still looking for a new deal along with Ja’Marr Chase. On defense, they lost D.J. Reader and that’s a huge loss for this team. They did bring in Sheldon Rankins to replace him, but those are some huge shoes to fill. If Joe Burrow remains healthy this season look for this Bengals team to be atop of the AFC North.
The Cleveland Browns also had injuries that derailed a promising season. First, they lost Nick Chubb to a horrific knee injury and they’re hoping he’ll be cleared to play. The second one being Deshaun Watson, who had season-ending shoulder surgery. To ensure they have a sold backup, the Browns signed two QBs who are more than capable of filling those shoes. Jamies Winston is the first one and Tyler Huntley, who served as the Ravens backup the last couple of years. Cleveland also signed D’Onta Foreman and Nyheim Hines to help sure up the backfield. The defense was as good as advertised and they kept Za’Darius Smith. If Myles Garrett is healthy, this defense will be one of the best in the league. The health of this team will determine their positioning in the tough AFC North this season.
Last and not least, we have the Pittsburgh Steelers as they try to get back to the playoffs. The big move the Steelers made was to bring in Russell Wilson. Pittsburgh was one of the six teams that I felt Wilson could go to and make an impact. If that wasn’t enough, the Steelers traded for Justin Fields who could turn out to be their quarterback of the future. The Steelers added depth at the WR position to go along with George Pickens. They brought over Cordarrelle Patterson, Quez Watkins, and Van Jefferson to bolster the receiving core. On defense, the Steelers continued to add to their already stout group. They signed Patrick Queen from the Ravens, and this is an instant upgrade on defense. Can Russell Wilson have similar he had a couple years ago in Denver? If so, the Steelers will be in the mix of the AFC North.
