We have the AFC East and North out of the way so far. We now turn our attention to the AFC South Division, and we’ll see if Houston can repeat as the division winner. The Texans and rookie QB C.J. Stroud surprised the league with their turnaround season. They won the AFC South by one game over the Jacksonville Jaguars and Indianapolis Colts. Jacksonville is looking to rebound after a disastrous end to the season. Indianapolis dealt with injuries throughout the season last year. Anthony Richardson missed most of his rookie season and he’ll look to make an impact this year. Tennessee went through a lot of changes during the offseason. Can they compete in the AFC South this season? Will it be a three team race like a season ago? Check out Trav’s 2024 AFC South Division predictions for this season.
The Houston Texans were one of the worse teams in the league a couple years ago. They hired DeMeco Ryans and drafted C.J. Stroud, Will Anderson and Tank Dell and now they’re one of the best teams in the league. As of now, they’re one of my top 5 teams in the AFC. Houston had the opportunity to build an impressive roster seeing C.J. Stroud is still on a rookie deal. The Texans already have an amazing defense, but they acquired more help on that side. Danielle Hunter and Denico Autry will make the Texans pass rush one of the best in the league this season. They also addressed the secondary and linebacker core in free agency also. On offense, they traded for Stephon Diggs to add to an already great core of receivers. Houston has a shot at being the best team in the AFC this season.
The Indianapolis Colts lost promising, young rookie Anthony Richardson early in the season. Gardner Minshew did a great job in his absence and some of it was without Jonathan Taylor. Richardson development will determine how well this Colts team be this season. Will he have a season like C.J. Stroud, or will he make a lot of rookie mistakes? They will have the services of Jonathan Taylor from the beginning, and they re-signed Michael Pittman Jr. On defense, they locked a few of their top players into new deals. Zaire Franklin and Kenny Moore II signed a three-year extension to remain with the Colts. Grover Stewart also opted to sign a 3-year deal to keep one of the league’s top rush defenders. Indianapolis spent a lot of money on their defensive line and that’s smart playing in the AFC South.
Jacksonville will look to push last season in their rearview mirror and retool an already good roster. They addressed the defense right away by signing Arik Armstead from the 49ers to a 3-year deal. Armstead is one of the better interior defensive linemen in the league. Having Armstead along with Josh Allen and Travon Walker will cause problems to opposing offensive lines. They added Darnell Savage at the safety position and Ronald Darby at the cornerback spot. They bring veteran leadership to this Jaguars secondary. On offense, they extended Trevor Lawrence to a long-term extension to keep him in Jacksonville for a while. Lawrence had a rough season a year ago, which is surprising because he was an MVP candidate to me. Can the Jaguars put it all together and make another run in the AFC South this season?
Lastly, we have the Tennessee Titans who made a lot of moves this past offseason. First, they will be without Derrick Henry this season as he was replaced with Tony Pollard. Will Levis step into the starting role at quarterback this season. With the addition of Tony Pollard, the Titans improved their offense to give the young signal caller some weapons. Tennessee signed Calvin Ridley to go alongside DeAndre Hopkins. Hopkins is currently slated to miss several weeks with an injured knee. Lloyd Cushenberry agreed to a four-year deal to become their new starting center. Mason Rudolph will be the new backup in Tennessee behind Levis. The defense has always been good they just can’t stay healthy. Just like the Colts, the Titans will go as far as their young QB will take them. Will they compete in the AFC South this upcoming season?
