Week 1 of the NFL season is finally in the books. We ended the week with the San Francisco 49ers defeat the New York Jets on Monday Night. Kansas City defeated the Baltimore Ravens on Thursday night in a thriller that was decided by a toe. In the first game from Brazil, the Philadelphia Eagles took down the Green Bay Packers in a close one. My Week 1 picks left me with a 11-5 record and a winning percentage of 68.8%. My first loss came when the Chiefs took down the Ravens. Atlanta losing their home opener against the Pittsburgh Steelers was the second defeat. In one of the shocking games, the New England Patriots went to Cincinnati and defeated one of my top 5 AFC teams this season. The fourth loss came after picking the New York Giants to defeat the Minnesota Vikings.
The final defeat came when the Cowboys manhandled the Cleveland Browns on the road. The big news of the week had to be the incident with Tyreek Hill and the police on his way to the game. Jordan Love will miss between 3-6 weeks with a sprain MCL he sustained on the final play of the game. Carolina looks like they will have the top pick in the upcoming draft after being blown out by the Saints. Puka Nacua was put on IR after aggravating his knee injury from preseason. The Sunday Night game saw a great game as the Detroit Lions beat the Los Angeles Rams in OT. On Monday Night, Jordan Mason played a great game in the absence of Christian McCaffrey to lead the Niners over the Jets. I’ll be predicting a total of 10 games so check out Trav’s 2024 NFL Week 2 picks below.
We have a key AFC East matchup for our Thursday Night game. The Buffalo Bills will head to Miami to face off with the Dolphins. Buffalo defeated Arizona in Week 1 in a tougher than expected game. Josh Allen looked great, but the defense will have a lot to figure out before this one. The key will be the running game and James Cook to keep the Dolphins offense off the field. Can the Bills upset the Dolphins? Miami was led by Tua throwing over 330 yards in their opener. The Dolphins will need to find their running game to open their passing game against Buffalo. This game will come down to which quarterback can make the most plays and limit turnovers. Buffalo and their receiving core are still trying to get things together. I’m going with Miami to leave this game with the win. Dolphins Win 24-20
We start Sunday off with the New Orleans Saints heading to Dallas to face the Cowboys. New Orleans blew out their division foe, Carolina, by 37 points in the season opener. The defense flustered Bryce Young and the Panthers offense throughout the entire game. On offense, the Saints scored at will and it was effortless. In Dallas, the offensive line will face one of the toughest defensive fronts in the league. Can Derek Carr be efficient against arguably the best defense in the league? The defense of the Cowboys pressure Deshaun Watson the entire game and the run game was nonexistent. Dak Prescott and the offense didn’t have to do much, but they will have to step up against the Saints. Dallas should leave this game with the win and a 2-0 record. Cowboys Win 31-20
We have a rematch of the divisional round of the NFC playoffs from a year ago. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers will head back to Detroit to face the Lions. Tampa and their offense looked great in their season opening win over Washington. Baker Mayfield carved up the Commanders defense for 4 TDs and 289 yards through the air. The defense will face a tough Lions offense and they’ll be without Antonio Winfield. The defense traded Carlton Davis III to this Lions team in the offseason. Detroit defeated the Rams on Sunday Night in a game that went into overtime. The defense was good against the Rams and their tough offense. Jared Goff will have to have a better game, and he should. Detroit was led by their running back tandem of David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs. Detroit should win this one. Lions Win 31-21
We have the San Francisco 49ers making the cross country trip to Minnesota to face the Vikings. The big question surrounding the Niners is the health and availability of Christian McCaffrey. McCaffrey didn’t play in Week 1 due to his lingering calf injury. Jordan Mason more than just filled in for McCaffrey, but he put the league on notice. The defense lead by Fred Warner was everywhere as they had the Jets offense not getting into a rhythm. Minnesota opened their season in New York against the Giants, and they destroyed them. Sam Darnold looked great as the signal caller for the Vikings. Darnold played with the Niners and I’m sure this game was circled on his calendar. The Vikings defense looked great, but this Niners offense is much different from the Giants. I’m picking the Niners in a good game against the Vikings. 49ers Win 27-17
The Seattle Seahawks will make the cross country trip to New England to face the Patriots. The Seahawks used a balanced offense to defeat the Denver Broncos. Seattle and their defense did have to face a rookie quarterback in Bo Nix. Either way, the defensive front of the Seahawks is top tier as they know how to get after opposing quarterbacks. Can Geno Smith and the offense improve their play against a tough Patriots defense? New England defeating the Bengals on the road was probably the biggest surprise of Week 1. Jacoby Brissett brings veteran leadership from the quarterback position, and he didn’t turn the ball over. Rhamondre Stevenson rushed for 120 yards as he led the Patriots ground attack. Can the Patriots repeat that defensive performance? This could be a defensive battle, and another New England upset. Patriots Win 16-14
We have a battle between two former Clemson quarterbacking legends. The Cleveland Browns and Deshaun Watson head to Jacksonville to take on the Jaguars and Trevor Lawrence. The Browns were beaten down at the hands of the Cowboys in Week 1. Cleveland came into the game missing both tackles and David Njoku went down with an ankle injury. Can the Browns pick up the win on the road against a tough Jags team? Jacksonville fell to one of their in-state rivals in Miami last week. The offense had a tough time moving the ball against Miami. Cleveland possesses a tough defense also, but will Trevor Lawrence and the offense find a way to make plays? Can the defense eliminate big plays against the Browns? In a tough matchup, I’m going with the home team to leave with the win. Jaguars Win 24-20
The Las Vegas Raiders will hit the road and visit Baltimore to face the Ravens. The Raiders will be on the road again after being in Los Angeles for the opener against the Chargers. The defense allowed Justin Herbert to only 144 yards through the air. The Raiders must do a better job at running the ball if they have any shot to beat Baltimore. How will the new and improved Raiders defense play against Lamar Jackson? Baltimore fell to the Chiefs on opening night in a great game. Jackson had over 270 yards passing and another 122 on the ground. This will not be sustainable throughout the season, so Baltimore needs to get Derrick Henry involved. The Ravens defense should frustrate Gardner Minshew to make a mistake or two. Baltimore should pick up their first win of the season. Ravens Win 31-17
The Cincinnati Bengals will head to Kansas City to face the Chiefs. Cincinnati is coming off a loss to the Patriots where Joe Burrow only threw for 164 yards. The Bengals couldn’t establish a run game, and they were without Tee Higgins also. The cloud of Ja’Marr Chase and his contract still looms over this franchise. Cincinnati was one of my top 5 teams in the AFC for this upcoming season. Can Joe Burrow go 4-1 against Mahomes in his career? Kansas City defeated the Ravens in a rematch of the AFC Championship game from a year ago. Mahomes almost threw for 300 yards, but Isiah Pacheco only rushed for 45 yards. Rashee Rice and Xavier Worthy had immediate impacts. The defense is still one of the better ones in the league. I’m picking Kansas City to win and Mahomes going 3-2 against Burrow. Chiefs Win 24-21
The Chicago Bears will travel to Houston for the Sunday Night game against the Texans. The Chicago Bears had a very slow start in their game against Tennessee in Week 1. The Bears went on to win that game behind great defensive and special teams play. Caleb Williams only threw for 93 yards on 29 pass attempts. D’Andre Swift only rushed for 30 yards on 10 attempts. Chicago scored from a pick 6 and a block punt. Can they put it together on the road in Houston? The Texans edged the Colts in a tough opening game against one of their AFC South rivals. Stroud tossed a pair of touchdowns while Joe Mixon stole the show in his Texans debut. Mixon rushed for 159 yards on 30 carries. On Sunday night, I’m picking Houston to leave with a 2-0 record. Texans Win 27-17
The Monday Night game will have the Atlanta Falcons traveling to Philly to face the Eagles. The Falcons dropped their home opener against the Pittsburgh Steelers. With all the new additions, this Atlanta Falcons team should win the NFC South. Are they Super Bowl contenders in the NFC? Kirk Cousins tossed a pair of INTs and his inability to move hurt this Atlanta team. The defense came to play, but how will they fare against this Eagles offense? The Eagles looked great in their game against Green Bay in Brazil. The outside pass rush was concerning, but the secondary looked great for the most part. Can Saquon duplicate the performance he had against Green Bay? Will Jalen Hurts limit his turnovers against one of the best defenses? I’m riding with Philly in what should be a good, close game. Eagles Win 30-21
