Week 6 is in the books, and it was one for the ages. We had five teams in the top 11 fall last week. Texas reclaimed the top spot in the new college football rankings. The biggest upset of the weekend and season thus far came when Vanderbilt defeated Alabama 40-35. The second upset came when Arkansas took down Tennessee, who was ranked 4th at the time. The third upset of the weekend came when the Missouri Tigers were blown out by the Texas A&M Aggies. Missouri was ranked 9th at the time and the Aggies were the 25th ranked team in the country. The 10th ranked Michigan Wolverines traveled cross country and fell to the Washington Huskies. If that wasn’t enough, then 11th ranked USC lost to Minnesota 24-17. My Week 6 record was 5-5, which is my worse one thus far.
My overall mark is now 24-11 and my winning percentage dropped from 76 to 68.6%. My first loss came on Friday night when Syracuse took down UNLV in their first game as a ranked team. The SMU Mustangs went to Louisville and defeated the Cardinal to win their second ACC contest. In another ACC matchup, the Virginia Cavaliers took down Boston College for my third loss. The fourth defeat came when Texas Tech went to Arizona and beat the Wildcats. The final defeat was one of the big upsets of the weekend and it was Arkansas taking down Tennessee. I’ll be predicting another 8 games with hopes of raising my winning percentage back in the 70% mark. Check out Trav’s Week 7 college football picks below.
We kick things off with the Friday Night game once again. The 16th ranked Utah Utes head to the desert to face the Arizona State Sun Devils. The Utes dropped their first game to Arizona before their bye week. Utah still have one of the best defenses in the country by allowing 15 points a game. The offense is struggling after scoring 32 points in their last two games. Can the Utes rebound from their first loss and get the win? Arizona State rebounded from their first loss of the season by picking up a big win against Kansas. The Sun Devils are one of the best running teams in the country. The defense gives up a lot of points after giving up 28 points a game in the last four games. In a tough game, I’m picking the Utes to get the road win. Utah Win 27-24
We have the top ranked Texas Longhorns battling the 18th ranked Oklahoma Sooners. The Red River Showdown is an annual event for one of the biggest rivalries in college football. The Longhorns has dominated every opponent this season. In the last couple of games Arch Manning took over the reins. Quinn Ewers went down with an injury, but is on track to play in this one. Can Texas continue to dominate like they have all season? Oklahoma did have the one loss at home to Tennessee a couple week ago. The Sooners have been holding it down on the defensive side of the ball. On offense, this is a major issue for the Sooners. They rank in the 100s in both passing and rushing yards. This won’t end well for the Sooners in this one. Texas Win 34-21
We head to the Big Ten as the 4th ranked Penn State Nittany Lions head west to face the USC Trojans. There haven’t been a lot of talk about Penn State, but they have climbed to 4th now. The offense wears opposing teams down, while the defense is as good as it gets. Are the Nittany Lions that good or is it due to their schedule? The only win against a ranked team came against Illinois. How will they fare in Cali? USC is in danger of having their season become a disappointment. They have dropped two of their last three with both losses being on the road. At home, this is a different Trojans team seeing they’ve scored 86 points in two games. Can they do that against the Nittany Lions? This is a tough one, but I’m going Nittany Lions. Penn State Win 31-30
This is the big matchup of the weekend and one of the biggest we’ll see all year. The 2nd ranked Ohio State will head out west to battle the 3rd ranked Oregon Ducks. You can make the case for Ohio State being the best team in the country. They are beating teams by an average of almost 40 points a game. The toughest opponent they played was Iowa and they put up 35 points on them. Dillon Gabriel was one of the Heisman favorites when the season started. This game could either catapult him or drop him down. The Ducks played close games in the first two but have blown out opponents in the last three. It is hard to go to Eugene, Oregon at night and leave with a win. I’m going with the Buckeyes to beat the Ducks. Ohio State Win 34-31
We have a top 15 matchup between two of the better SEC teams. The 9th ranked Ole Miss Rebels will head to Louisiana to face the 13th ranked LSU Tigers. The Rebels rebounded nicely after their first defeat by dominating South Carolina. The stats say Ole Miss is one of the best teams on both sides of the ball. Furman, MTSU and Georgia Southern are three of those opponents. How will they fare on the road at night against LSU? LSU is on a 4-game winning streak after losing the opener against USC. Garrett Nussmeier has turned into one of the better quarterbacks in the country. The defense continues to get better as they’re giving up almost 22 points a game. The Tigers are a different team at home for night games. This should be a close one with the Tigers winning. LSU Win 38-31
We have a pair of ACC teams that’s looking to be in the mix by the end of the season. The Louisville Cardinal will head to Virginia to take on the Cavaliers. Louisville will battle Miami next weekend, so this game is critical. The Cardinal have dropped two in a row and can’t afford a second ACC loss. The defense is concerning after giving up over 30 points in back to back weekends. Will they rebound against Virginia? Virginia enters this game with a 2-0 record in the ACC. They fell to Maryland earlier in the season and that’s their only loss. Virginia is one of five teams in the ACC that’s still undefeated. Clemson is another one of those teams and they go there next weekend. The Cavs could be looking at Clemson a week earlier which is why I’ll go with the Cardinal. Louisville Win 30-21
The 18th ranked Kansas State heads to Boulder to battle the Colorado Buffaloes on Saturday Night. The Wildcats have been battle tested seeing their last three games came against teams that’s been ranked or currently ranked. Arizona, BYU, and Oklahoma State are the teams, and BYU is their only loss of the season. Kansas State do a lot of their damage on the ground. Kansas State can’t lose their second conference game this early in the season. Could Colorado be finding their groove now? The Buffaloes are coming off their bye week after blowing out UCF. Shedeur Sanders is starting to hit his stride, but they need a serious run game. In a big game like this one, could Travis Hunter be the difference maker for them? In a tough game, I’m rolling with the Buffs to pull off the upset. Colorado Win 41-38
We have a huge Big 12 matchup as the 11th ranked Iowa State Cyclones head to West Virginia to take on the Mountaineers. Iowa State is probably the biggest surprise of the season. The Cyclones are 5-0, ranked 11th and a schedule that’s favorable to them. The Cyclones along with Texas Tech, BYU, West Virginia, and Colorado are all undefeated in Big 12 conference play. Can the Cyclones continue their magical season and remain unbeaten? Morgantown is one of the toughest places to play in college and especially at night. West Virginia have dropped two games and both teams are ranked in the top 25. The Mountaineers have one of the best run offenses in the country. Can they use it to their advantage and wear down the Cyclones defense? I’m picking the Mountaineers to upset the Cyclones. West Virginia Win 34-27
