The NFL regular season kicks off in about a week and a half. The Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles will host the Dallas Cowboys on September 4^th. Those are two NFC teams, but we will concentrate on the AFC and see which are the top 5 teams. My top 5 AFC teams from last season had a couple of solid ones. The Chiefs and Ravens were my top two teams from a year ago. Kansas City defeated the Buffalo Bills and then fell to the Eagles in the Super Bowl. Can the Chiefs make it back to the Super Bowl? Will Baltimore finally get over the hump and make a Super Bowl run with Lamar Jackson at the helm? Will the Bills or another team finally get over the hump and have a shot? Baltimore Ravens

It seems like the Ravens are on the cusp of getting to the Super Bowl. Last season, they fell to the Bills in the Divisional Round. Lamar Jackson had another MVP season, and Derrick Henry proved he’s still one of the best running backs in the league. The injury to Zay Flowers and his unavailability in the playoffs hurt Baltimore. Baltimore added DeAndre Hopkins during free agency and re-signed Rashod Bateman. The defense should be one of the better ones in the league this season. Everything will revolve around the play of Lamar Jackson. Jackson should have another MVP-type season. Can they keep their momentum to finally reach the Super Bowl? The Ravens look and feel like a different team. They seem hungry and don’t be surprised if they represent the AFC in this year’s Super Bowl. They’re the top AFC teams heading into the 2025 season.

Kansas City Chiefs

The Eagles blew out the Chiefs in Super Bowl LIX. Kansas City has appeared in five of the last six Super Bowls. The Chiefs have won three of those five Super Bowls and are looking to go back to the Big Game. Patrick Mahomes is already one of the greatest QBs in the history of the game. Mahomes will only turn 30 years old in less than a month. Despite all his success, Mahomes is now about to enter his prime. Travis Kelce signed an extension, but we don’t know how long he’ll play. They added Elijah Mitchell to their backfield. On defense, they kept their core together by re-signing George Karlaftis and Nick Bolton. Trent McDuffie and Leo Chenal had their fifth-year options picked up. Kansas City will be fighting again for home-field advantage in January with hopes of reaching another Super Bowl.

Buffalo Bills

Buffalo, Baltimore, and Kansas City are the Big 3 to me of the AFC. Buffalo took Kansas City to their limits in the AFC Championship game last season. Josh Allen took home the league MVP award. Allen had his best season in the league last season by eliminating his turnovers. Josh Alen was rewarded with a record-setting 6-year extension. James Cook became one of the best running backs in the league last year. Cook was rewarded with a 4-year extension during training camp. The Bills took a huge chance by trading for Joey Bosa. If healthy, Bosa could wreak havoc on quarterbacks like Mahomes, Jackson, and Burrow. Everything revolves around the play of Josh Allen and his trying to repeat his remarkable season a year ago. As of now, the Bills are my 3^rd best team in the AFC heading into 2025.

Denver Broncos

The Denver Broncos come in as my 4^th best team in the AFC to begin the season. Bo Nix is headed into his second season as the signal caller for the Broncos. Bo Nix’s rookie season was just as good as Jayden Daniels’ statistically. Like any other team, the Broncos continue to build around their quarterback on a rookie deal. First, the Broncos extended Zach Allen after his amazing season. Allen is one of the best pass rushers in the league. Dre Greenlaw, who’s one of the better LBs when healthy, was signed by Denver. The defense should be at the top of the league again. Denver added another weapon in Evan Engram for Bo Nix. When healthy, Engram is one of the more versatile TEs in the league. JK Dobbins signed with Denver, also, as he’s one of the more physical running backs when healthy.

Cincinnati Bengals

The fifth spot was a tough one, but I’m going with the Cincinnati Bengals. The Bengals can outscore every offense in the league. Joe Burrow is in the running to be the best quarterback in the league. Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins are two of the best receivers in the league, and both got paid in the offseason. If Higgins can stay healthy for the entire season, they will compete in the AFC North with Baltimore. Chase Brown has become one of the better running backs in the league. The defense is still a work in progress with a lot of young guys. Trey Hendrickson has held out all preseason, but he signed a massive one-year deal with the Bengals. If the young guys can show up, this team could be much higher in the AFC pecking order.
